Language Network Scotland
Scotland Officer Tim Steward has been working since April 2003 to set up and establish Language Network Scotland. Working from Edinburgh, Language Network Scotland has been mapping out and contacting all the stakeholders in the business and language community in Scotland. There are three major sectors involved, businesses, education and the many intermediary organisations who work with Scottish businesses. This initial diagram will give some idea of the diversity and complexity of the field.

A Language Strategy for Scotland
To develop a Language Strategy for Scotland has involved initiating relationships
with key players such as Sector
Skills Alliance Scotland and with the two national Enterprise Companies,
Scottish
Enterprise and Highlands
& Islands Enterprise, and also with Scottish
Development International. Our objective is to get a language strategy
clearly articulated in Scottish Government policy documents such as Smart
Successful Scotland, Determined to Succeed and Learning through Life,
Life through Learning, through both the Department
of Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning and the Scottish Executive
Education department.
Partner organisations
We are working closely with Scottish
CILT – the Scottish Centre for Information on Language Teaching
and Research in Stirling University in the area of secondary education,
languages, business and careers and collaborating actively in the Languages
for Export Awards with the Scottish
Council for Development and Industry.
LN Scotland has been involved in collaborative work with various Local Authority Education departments, major companies such as BP and with Careers Scotland in language, business and careers seminars for secondary school students.

and opportunities for study in the rural areas can be found by contacting
the University of the Highlands
& Islands (UHI) Millennium Institute.

- Shell Shared Service Centre – Glasgow Limited - A successful and growing Multilingual Financial Shared Service Centre (pdf, 86kb): Shell set up their multilingual shared service centre in the very heart of Glasgow opposite Central Station in 1998 and have rapidly recognised the benefit that it brings to their operations.
